Chennai Airport Plans Capacity Expansion

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has prepared a two-phase expansion plan to increase capacity at Chennai International Airport. By April 2027, the number of passenger boarding bridges is expected to reach 17, while aircraft parking stands will increase to 23.

Currently, only 13 passenger boarding bridges are operational, requiring some aircraft to use remote stands and passengers to be transported by buses. The planned improvements aim to accommodate 23 aircraft simultaneously and increase annual passenger capacity from 30 million to 35 million.

AAI also plans to increase hourly aircraft movement capacity from the current 18 to 36 in the first phase and eventually to 45.
